Everybody knows that, right ?\u00a0 To be honest, this was also my first reaction when I met Chris Loeber back in 2019.We both had been commenting on some &#8220;Katana&#8221; related subreddit, trying to keep people from blowing their money on the overpriced junk that gets cranked out by sweatshops in cities like Longquan while the\u00a0 old art of forging Katana in Japan is in commercial decline. Not only because of\u00a0 the competition from China, but also due to a lack of interest on their domestic market and the high cost that put real Japanese swords out of reach for most practitioners of\u00a0 arts like Battodo or Tameshigiri. And Chris and Shin had decided to change that.\u00a0\u00a0Both the cost of\u00a0 &#8220;Wako&#8221;, the iron-sand-based raw material that comes out of the NBTHK&#8217;s tatara furnaces, as well as the labor intense steps required to create the &#8220;Sunobe&#8221; from which the Katana is finally forged, contribute a lot of cost to the end product. What if one was able to\u00a0 skip those steps and instead forge a Katana from modern steel but with all the knowledge and experience of a true Katana-Kaji ?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2d1dd28 elementor-section-full_width elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2d1dd28\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5540137\" data-id=\"5540137\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74c1a29 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74c1a29\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>The steel<\/h3><p>Der Stahl, der in Japan traditionell zum Schmieden von Katana verwendet wird, ist Tama-Hagane, ein Stahl, der aus Eisensand (satetsu) in einem Schmelzverfahren hergestellt wird, um die unerw\u00fcnschten Beimengungen zu entfernen.  Tamahagane ist heterogen und zeichnet sich teilweise durch einen hohen Kohlenstoffgehalt aus. Au\u00dferdem ist es arm an unerw\u00fcnschten Beimengungen wie Schwefel und Phosphor. Es ist jedoch kaum die erste Wahl f\u00fcr einen Schmied f\u00fcr ein Katana im 21. Jahrhundert.\u00a0<\/p><p>Matsukaze&#8217;s blade is thus forged from Shirogami III (Shirogami-Ko) steel. Shirogami is a very pure Japanese high carbon steel\u00a0 with the least amount of impurities in the form of Sulfur (S) and Phosphorus (P).\u00a0 Carbon (C)\u00a0 is at 0.8%. It is similar to AISI W108 and clearly superior to steel commonly used for practitioners blades like AISI 1095. Alle Matsukaze-Klingen werden, wie die meisten historischen Katana, in Kobuse um ein Shingane aus Weichstahl gebaut. We checked out a number of different Togishi in Japan, Europe and the US and finally ended up with two that we found to deliver the best results at reasonable cost.&nbsp; Although the steel that is being used is obviously non-folded, our polisher Christophe managed to bring out a fine and dense Hada in the Jigane.&nbsp; Since Shirogami-steel is significantly harder than traditional Tamahagane, it takes a lot of elbow-grease to polish.
